Abstract
The environment, intrinsically linked to the survival of living beings and the continuity of future generations, must always be preserved and protected. Combating environmental crimes, particularly in contemporary societies, is an urgent necessity and constitutes one of the clearest manifestations of securing environmental justice. The present article, entitled “Environmental Criminal Policy in the Qurʾān”, employs a descriptive method and library-based analysis to explore mechanisms of environmental protection and the prevention of environmental crimes. The findings reveal that the Qurʾān promotes environmentally harmonious behavior while condemning destructive practices, praising the establishment of physical safeguards around natural resources, and emphasizing their trusteeship in the hands of the Islamic government as a form of stewardship. Islamic criminal policy concerning environmental harm stresses the prohibition of such acts. Accordingly, the Islamic ruler may, depending on the nature of the offense and the offender’s personal circumstances, employ traditional punishments, newly developed sanctions such as community service, or preventive and rehabilitative measures.
