Abstract
The majority of jurists have rejected the possibility of extending the title ifsād fī al-arḍ (corruption on earth) to crimes beyond muḥāraba (armed insurrection). Their reasoning is twofold: first, that ifsād fī al-arḍ is not an independent penal category; and second, even if treated as such, it cannot be applied to crimes other than muḥāraba. Verses 32 and 33 of Sūrat al-Māʾida (Qurʾān 5:32–33) constitute the principal Qurʾānic foundation of this prevailing view. Arguments cited include the absence of generality, the gradational nature of the term ifsād, the implication of the coordinating particle wa (and) in conjoining ifsād and muḥāraba, the interpretive dependence of ifsād on muḥāraba, the non-repetition of the relative pronoun alladhīna before the clause wa-yasʿawna fī al-arḍ fasādan (“and strive throughout the land to cause corruption”), and certain additional linguistic points. Employing a descriptive–analytical method and a library-based study, the present article critiques these Qurʾānic arguments and concludes that they fail to substantiate the prevailing claim. Accordingly, Qurʾān 5:32–33 not only do not support the dominant view but also allow for recognizing the independence of ifsād fī al-arḍ and its extension to other crimes.
